Children Are What They Eat: How to Get Your Kids to Eat More Fruit

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard a parent say: “my child won’t eat anything but…XYZ”.  If I could count the number of times I’ve stood in line behind a family with a cart full of processed sugar, fatty foods and sugar water, I’d probably lose count somewhere after 500,000,000.  Ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration but ya’ll get my drift.  As parents it is so easy to give in when our children don’t want to eat certain foods.  There are bigger battles, right?  Wrong!!

Healthy food choices begin at home from a very young age.  The first foods that we give our babies when transitioning to solid food from breast or bottle is typically fruit and veggies.  No chaser!  That natural goodness is exactly what we need to continue to encourage our children to eat.  How do we do that?  By making the food exciting!  By display them in the most fun and energetic way.  By letting our children see us enjoying eating them.  By making that the “go to” snack food.  And lastly, by not giving them the other stuff.  You know the stuff…cakes, pies, cookies, candy, sugary drinks, soda, and any other unhealthy foods you can think of.  If we don’t give it to them they won’t develop a taste for it.

I am always looking for ways to make healthy foods fun and exciting for my children.  I buy fresh fruit weekly and display it on our table so that they have a consistent line of sight to the foods I want them to eat.  What do you think?
